Research Analyst
Ellison Tjirera
A research analyst is a trained professional whose vocation is making sense of complex socio-economic and political issues using the systematic gathering of verifiable evidence (data) as the basis to arrive at particular conclusions.
At times, because of their well-developed analytical acumen, they can analytically make interesting conclusions without gathering any verifiable evidence.
A research analyst is mostly involved in the systematic gathering of data (conducting research) through various methods of data collection such as interview guides and questionnaires.
Moreover, being a research analyst involves a great deal of reading secondary materials (such as books, journal articles, and newspapers) for the purpose of further analysis and knowledge production. If I can sum it in three words, being an RA is investigating, reading and writing.
One needs to be curiosity and deep appreciation of space and time in which phenomena take place.
“In the realm of accomplishments, I have managed to author a number of academic papers, book chapters and newspaper articles to shape debates around a number of socio-political issues. Being invited to share my knowledge every now and then at various forums is also a fulfilling undertaking” says Tjirera.
