Price monster gets lockdown hangover
Annual inflation for alcoholic beverages last month frothed to 3.6% after Namibians could start buying liquor legally again. In the previous two dry months, the figure was 1.3% and 1.6% respectively, according to data released by the Namibian Statistics Agency (NSA) yesterday. June’s rate, however, is still considerably more sober than the 7.9% recorded a year ago. Month-on-month, alcohol inflation jumped by an intoxicating 1.8% - the highest monthly fizz since July 2018. Alcohol and tobacco is the fourth most important item in the Namibian consumer basket after transport, food and housing. The average consumer spends N$12.59 out of every N$100 on alcohol and tobacco. In the North, 13.1% of the consumer basket consists of alcohol and tobacco. In Windhoek the figure is 11%. In the South, East and at the coast 14.3% is spent on these items.
