'n Groep verpleegsusters van die Windhoek Sentrale Hospitaal en die Kankervereniging van Namibië (CAN), twee verpleegsusters uit die private gesondheidsbedryf en 'n mediese verteenwoordiger van Coloplast het onlangs 'n suksesvolle inligtingsdag vir Namibië se stoma-pasiënte by die Windhoek Sentrale Hospitaal aangebied.

Dit was die eerste keer dat stoma-pasiënte onder die vaandel van die ondersteuningsgroep byeengekom het om hul ervarings met mekaar te deel en ook inligting bymekaar te maak oor maniere om hul lewens as stoma-pasiënte te verbeter en te verryk.

'n Stoma of ostomie is 'n chirurgiese opening wat deur 'n dokter om verskeie mediese redes in die buik of maag gemaak word.

Dit help met die deurgang van afval soos ontlasting of urine om in 'n sakkie te versamel wat oor die stoma gedra word.

Die verskillende stomas sluit dié vir 'n kolostomie, ileostomie of urostomie in.

Wêreld-ostomiedag word elke drie jaar op die eerste Saterdag in Oktober gevier en fokus op die wêreldwye verbetering van die rehabilitasie van stoma-pasiënte.

Vanjaar se tema is “Praat en verander lewens” in 'n poging om stoma-pasiënte aan te moedig om hieroor te praat, omdat dit nie iets is om oor skaam te wees nie.

Vandeesmaand se byeenkoms by die Sentrale Hospitaal is deur 63 mense bygewoon, wat stoma-pasiënte en hul familie en vriende ingesluit het. Sommige het selfs vanuit Omaruru gereis om die byeenkoms by te woon.

Sr. Laura Obbes, wat op die versorging van stomas fokus, het die ontmoeting gelei en inligting oor onder meer die doelstellings van die ondersteuningsgroep en stoma-tipes gedeel.
