Namibia Tourism Expo presents: MyZone live entertainment with Corli du Toit
I have been playing yo-yo for ten years now. I started when I was living in London. I met a guy who showed me the basics and took me along to a yo-yo contest, and I was instantly hooked. I started competing all over Europe and have travelled to over eight different countries with the sport. I am sponsored by a yo-yo manufacturer from Hong Kong, C3yoyodesign. In 2012 I won the first ever women's division which was held at the European Yo-yo Championship in Prague. In 2014 I moved back to South Africa and in 2016 I was a semi-finalist in SA's Got Talent. Since 2014 I am running a small online yo-yo store (www.yoyos4africa.co.za) and teach kids to yo-yo once a week at our local yo-yo club.
“Yo-yo is definitely an art form. Of course there is a big technical aspect, and that is what is most judged in competitions. However, the aesthetics are also evaluated and usually account for 30% of the total mark. Most players develop their own style after a few years. The yo-yo is definitely something that can express individuality.”
