Namibia commemorates World Metrology Day
The Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) on Wednesday commemorated World Metrology Day under the theme ‘Measurements for Transport’.
Metrology is the scientific study of measurements.
The day is usually commemorated on 20 May each year to signify the anniversary of the signing of the Meter Convention in 1875.
The convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications.
Speaking at the commemoration, NSI Chief Executive Officer Chie Wasserfall said Namibia through the NSI participates in the activities of the Metre Convention through its associate membership of the General Conference of Weights and Measurements.
Namibia signed the International Committee of Weights and Measures–Mutual Recognition Arrangements in 2012.
“This year’s theme was chosen because transport plays such a key role in the modern world,” said Wasserfall.
The NSI as the national metrology institute in Namibia plays an important role in ensuring that credible measurement standards are in place to service the transport industry.
“In the transport sector, the NSI regulates measurements of quantities of products such as the fuels, oils, and measuring instruments used in the fuel industry,” she said.
Critical role
It also regulates all measuring instruments used for the Safety at Sea container weight verification regulation. This guideline requires that shipping containers are weighed accurately and on time to ensure the safe loading of container ships.
Wasserfall further emphasised that another critical role in the area of road safety is ensuring the accuracy and compliance of measuring instruments used in law enforcement which includes speed measuring devices and breathalysers.
Speaking at the same event, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Cedric Limbo, said it is important to note that a national measurement system in a developing country such as Namibia should cater for measurement standards that are appropriate to its needs.
“The ministry is looking forward to working with NSI to ensure recommendations that relate to some forms of transport and provide standards for the equipment used to measure various aspects of the transportation chain,” said Limbo. - Nampa
