Ná die wense en beloftes

Dani Booysen

It’s yet another damn editorial on gun violence

Another day in America, another mass shooting.

Pick the debate we ought to be having this time: Gun laws, thoughts and prayers, whether we should ID the shooters.

Round and round we go. Here we are starting another week with an editorial that was going to be about last Sunday’s mass shooting in Gilroy before it became an editorial about this Saturday’s mass shooting in El Paso. There seem to be so many of these shootings in our country that the names and places blur; the now horribly mundane frequency of the crime ought to numb any concerns about naming perpetrators seeking their 15 minutes of infamy.

No one is going to defend sensational coverage glorifying killers, but the reporting of simple facts shouldn’t be condemned.

The public needs more facts, not fewer, to understand why and how these shootings keep happening.

Since 1997, the friends of the firearms industry on Capitol Hill have blocked federal funding of studies of gun violence. Most of them belong to one party. And while most of them may indeed be sending the victims of the next mass shooting their thoughts and prayers, they won’t be sending along access to information that could make a difference.

Because that, too, can’t be allowed.

For reasons, we’re sure.
