Kohne conquers Otjihavera Xperience
HEINRICH Kohne was the overall winner of the Otjihavera Xperience two day event that took place last weekend. Kohne, with a total time of 31 hours 01 minute and 51 seconds, was followed by Oliver Freyer (31:04:34) and in third was the team of Michael Pretorius and Jose Barth. The woman overall winner was Elke Jagau with Eleanor Grassow with team mate Belinda McIntyre taking the honours in the woman?s team event.
The road took the cyclists over the grueling slopes and descents of the Otjihavera Mountains. The team event was again dominated by a very strong fi eld of seasoned mountain bikers. Among the huge fi eld of male contestants there were also three women teams and two individual women. The challenging event which spread over two days covered a distance of 90 kilometres for the fi rst day, and 65 km on the second day.
The start was at Heja Lodge fi nishing at Midgard later in the afternoon. The second day saw the riders cycle from Midgard to Okapuka Lodge. Due to the well marked and selected route there were no casualties that could have resulted in falls in the rough terrain. Although most riders ride with tubeless tyres, there were still a couple of casualties that suffered from side wall cuts. On day one the fi rst rider, Oliver Freyer, clocked in a time of 4 hours 35 minutes at Midgard followed by Heinrich Kohne. Third was the fi rst team consisting of Michael Pretorius and Jose Barth.
The fi rst lady home was Elke Jagau and the fi rst mixed team was Sophia Snyman with Frank Snyman. Referred to as the Royal team, as they met on the fi rst Otjihavera Xperience race, are now competing as a team (married couple). Eleanor Grassow and Belinda McIntyre were the fi rst woman?s team home for the day. After a tasty and fi lling meal, the riders were in bed very early due to the challenge that lay ahead the next day. Saturday turned out to be a beautiful summer?s day! This however meant that the temperature rose and this made it very challenging for the riders.
Fortunately the Build-It water point staff managed by the effi cient Andra van Staden made sure that all the refreshments and supplements were superbly cool and fresh for the long haul. The enthusiastic farmers also contributed a welcome drink to many a tired cyclist. The endurance event was sponsored by Radio Wave and water points seconded by Build-It.
