De Klerk always had a love for bikes and fast-moving machinery. He decided to pursue this fascination in 2007. “I started working at Bike and Quad Clinic. It started as a vacation job which later turned into a one-to-five job. After completing matric in 2010, I stayed on as a full-time technician. I started to help my father-in-law with track racing and later joined the quad oval track,” he said.
Building a career
In 2013, De Klerk got the opportunity to work for Pupkewitz Honda and build on the training he had.
He believes that one of the most important things to know is that if a person was able to grow themselves and achieve all their life goals at the company, the company should be their family. This includes getting up for work with a smile as he believes that if you’re not happy with what you are doing, it’s not intended for you.
At Pupkewitz Honda, he took on the role of wing sales. In 2019, he reaped the fruits thereof when he received a reward for wing salesman of the year. De Klerk says it has not always been an easy ride with Covid-19, but he was able to wholeheartedly perform tasks which could leave a mark on the clients he serves. He further added that another challenge faced because of Covid-19 was the important training sessions that have been cancelled. This meant that alternative ways were brought forward to ensure that the same effect that was brought by these trainings could be seen and executed in alternative ways. This did not discourage him to excel, he proudly said that giving up is not an option.
Defining success
De Klerk says success is sealed with the ability to do his job well, meeting the goals set by his managers and also being able to deliver a service to the best of his ability.
He encourages the youth in different careers to make it mandatory to do their work to the best of their abilities. “Always push to be the best you can be, even if you fail you would succeed. Small steps matter, you do not always have to take giant leaps to get to where you want to be. They can take other things away everything from you, but they will never be able to take away your knowledge, that’s yours to keep,” he said.
