Bay View in collaboration with COCDEC Swakopmund giving back
Positively impacting the tourism and hospitality sector and offering opportunities

Bay View Hotel Resort, a four-star beach resort at Dolphin Beach between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, has joined hands with Community Skills Development Centres (COCDEC) Swakopmund and will be offering their hospitality students additional training and work experience.
Bay View Hotel Resort is in an unrivalled location with 34 sea-view suites, a wellness centre, a restaurant, and conference facilities. With views of both the Namib dunes and Atlantic Ocean, Bay View Resort Hotel offers luxury, tranquillity, and trained, friendly staff.
“We passionately believe in developing and growing our team and so when we had the opportunity to work with COSDEC Swakopmund, we didn’t hesitate,” said Schalk van Wyk, the general manager.
The goal of COSDEC Swakopmund is to empower out-of-school youth, disadvantaged people and community members with practical skills incorporating business, entrepreneurship, and life skills to improve their quality of life. Bay View Resort Hotel is offering the COSDEC hospitality trainees an additional complementary training course. This gives them the opportunity to experience the day-to-day operations of a fully operational resort and additional basic training in fields such as housekeeping, waitering, bartending, basic barista, and receptionist.
“This idea was born when I signed up for Mr Supranational Namibia and got inspired by their slogan ‘Aspirational – Inspirational’ and by giving back to our community,” said Van Wyk.
This training is beneficial to trainees because it will allow them to apply their skills in a real-world hospitality environment that will give them experience and enable them to find employment once they have completed their course.
Hospitality can be defined somewhat broadly as an industry that focuses on providing consumers with a means to participate in leisure activities, be that staying in a hotel or dining in a restaurant. Therefore, there are a lot of career opportunities in the hospitality industry. Van Wyk started as a porter / housekeeper more than 12 years ago and can proudly say that today he is the general manager of Bay View Resort Hotel at Dolphin Beach.
“The hospitality industry offered me a chance to grow, and my biggest dream is to create those kinds of opportunities for Namibians who have the drive but not the funds, for training in the hospitality and tourism industry,” he says.
