Johan-André Fourie, CEO of the Namibian Private Schools Organisation (NAPSO), envisions a transformative future for private education in Namibia. Fourie’s long-term goal is to position NAPSO as the leading umbrella organisation for private schools in the country, nurturing academic excellence, sporting achievement, cultural pride, and Christian values.For him, NAPSO’s mission goes beyond connecting schools; it is about building communities and shaping tomorrow’s leaders.Over the next five years, Fourie aims to expand NAPSO’s influence by bringing more schools into the network, increasing participation in national and international events, and establishing a dedicated NAPSO Fund for educational scholarships and youth development. “I want NAPSO to become a recognised educational brand, both locally and internationally,” he says.What sets NAPSO apart in the competitive education sector is its holistic approach to learner development.Fourie explains, “Our projects span from the sports field to the arts stage, and from local to international tours. We are not just a sports or school network; we are a leadership platform for young people.”Current challenges, he notes, include financial pressures on schools and parents, as well as a shortage of qualified educators. NAPSO addresses these gaps through partnerships, sponsorships and training initiatives. The organisation also leverages technology to enrich the learning experience. Digital platforms facilitate communication and administration, while international collaborations – such as tours in Europe and Southern Africa – provide world-class exposure for learners.Fourie describes his leadership style as a blend of compassionate and strategic management. “I lead with service and vision, aiming to inspire rather than control. A leader must empower people to reach their full potential,” he says.Shared purposeHe values integrity, loyalty and a collaborative spirit in his management team, fostering a culture of appreciation, faith and shared purpose. Conflict is approached with listening, understanding and reconciliation, reflecting his background as a pastor.Innovation plays a central role in NAPSO’s strategy, from virtual sports competitions to the planning of international educational exchanges and digital learning exploration. Projects are selected based on their impact on children, sustainability and alignment with the organisation’s values. As a registered accountant, he manages the non-profit organisation with discipline and integrity, ensuring that investments benefit people and the mission, not just finances.Reflecting on challenges, Fourie says that setbacks are opportunities for growth, guided by faith and resilience. His inspiration comes from his family, his faith and the young people he works with daily.
