St George’s senior choir makes choral history at ATKV Applous finals
St George’s Diocesan School’s Senior Choir has made Namibian history by becoming the first school choir from Namibia to win a category at the prestigious ATKV Applous Choir Competition.
The national finals were held on Wednesday last week at the iconic ZK Matthews Hall on the UNISA campus in Pretoria, South Africa.
The ATKV Applous is South Africa’s oldest and most respected school choir competition, drawing entries from hundreds of choirs across the country and beyond. Competing in the Primary School Open Category, the St George’s Senior Choir was the first choir to perform on the day, setting a high standard with their powerful rendition of "Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel" by Greg Gilpin, followed by his stirring "Sanctus".
The audience was then taken on a vibrant cultural journey with "Khoexa Koe (Made for People)", an original Namibian composition by Herold Osmond !Owoseb, before the choir concluded their set with the electrifying showpiece, "Lightning".
The distinguished panel of six expert South African and international adjudicators awarded the choir ATKV Gold with an average score of 85.98%, securing first place in their category. Walvis Bay Gymnasium was awarded second place.
“This is a moment of immense pride for our school, our learners, and for Namibia,” said Jolanda Amoraal, the Senior Choir Conductor. “We’ve worked incredibly hard over the past six months, and our goal wasn’t just to compete; it was to set a new standard and show what Namibian choirs are capable of. I’m honoured to stand alongside such talented and dedicated young performers.”
She extended her thanks to accompanist Ebbie Becker, composer and percussionist Osmond !Owoseb, and the entire team of staff, parents, and music mentors who supported the choir throughout their journey.
This milestone achievement marks the first time since 2011 that St George’s reached the ATKV finals.
And this time, they emerged as winners!
