Jodé Mouton: A journey of adversity and triumph

Jodé Mouton, the second-eldest of three siblings, faced an unexpected turn in life when a seizure revealed she had a meningioma brain tumour. “Staring death right in the face," Mouton said as she recalls her disbelief upon hearing the news from the neurologist. Faced with the possibility of losing her eyesight, paralysis or memory loss, she embarked on a challenging journey.To start, growing up in a loving and strong family did remind her that they will be there through thick and thin and that she will not face this alone."The highlight of my survivor journey was that my entire tumour was removed," she said, expressing relief at avoiding radiation therapy.Facing adversityDuring her health battle, Mouton navigated the emotional toll of a shaved head and surgical insecurities. She also worried about not knowing how she would be perceived in society. She remained optimistic and welcomed all the challenges she might face."My perspective on life changed. Every day is merely a blessing," Mouton said. Support from family and friends, along with unwavering faith, became pillars during her recovery. She and her family were made aware that she might not survive the operation to save her life, but her family supported her and encouraged her to focus only on the positive and lean on her faith."Cherishing moments more now, we all strive to get closer to God," she said, emphasising the transformative power of her experience. Mouton’s recovery was marked by a momentous CT scan – "tumour-free and not cancerous.""Now, I am embracing a healthier lifestyle and looking at different career options."Plans forwardMouton said she will finish her GED examination this year and will plan her future afterward, as putting mental stress on her brain when considering her future could negatively affect her and have consequences.However, she plans to study in Thailand in the future but is focusing on her well-being for now. "Minor setbacks make major comebacks," she said. Continuing regular check-ups and a one-year medical treatment, Mouton embodies strength, resilience and profound appreciation for each day.Challenges faced during recoveryIn the midst of recovery, physical challenges restricted her from bathing in warm water due to the sensitivity of the wound on her head.The emotional toll was equally taxing. "I cried so much and questioned as to why this is happening to me," she said. Career aspirations shifted, but Mouton remains determined. "My tumour is merely a setback," she said.She said she is determined to achieve whatever she sets her mind to and will do everything fearlessly.Lessons learned and advice to survivorsHer journey imparted lessons of gratitude, resilience and an unwavering spirit, she said.
