First Africa Economic Leadership Expo heading for Swakopmund
120 exhibitors and 300 delegates expected
The first Africa Economic Leadership Expo and Summit will take place in Swakopmund at the end of May.
The coastal town of Swakopmund will host the first Africa Economic Leadership Expo under the theme "Discover Namibia – Doing business in Africa” from 23 to 25 May.
An estimated 120 exhibitors from the continent are expected to showcase their products and services at the event that will be staged at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre.
Co-founder and president of the Africa Economic Leadership Council, Heinrich Hafeni (who is also a Swakopmund municipal councilor), explained that the council is a pan-African organization that focuses on the development and promotion of business and entrepreneur leaders on the continent. The initiative was born after the African Continental Free Trade Agreement was signed and came into effect at the start of 2021.
“Africa is open for business, and this is why we started this organization.”
Hafeni explained that the secretariat consisted of several business leaders from across the continent. Earlier this month the South African chapter of the organization was launch, while the Namibian chapter was launched last year. “Fast forward a year to today and this expo and summit is going to be the biggest business post-Covid event in Namibia.”
According to him, the main aim of the event is to expose and promote Namibia as a continental business partner.
"It will allow for central government, corporates, diplomatic missions and entrepreneurs to meet and engage one another about the business opportunities in the rest of Africa and vice-versa.
The three day expo will exhibit 120 corporates, small and micro businesses, as well as government and state-owned enterprises. Delegates from across Africa and a broad range of sectors (tourism, agriculture, logistics and telecommunication, amongst others) will also be part of a summit and other networking platforms during the three days."
A business gala dinner will be held on 25 May which is also Africa Day.
“We made sure that the expo and summit coincides with Africa Day in order to recognize the objective, and the participants. There will be prominent speakers too,” Hafeni said.
He emphasized that the expo will not be some random business attempt, but grounded in his own experience and profession considering he was the chairman of the Swakopmund chapter of the NCCI and founder of the successful annual Swaitex Trade Expo.
“This is the start of a big dream. We are young entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity to make Namibia a launchpad for business leadership development in the African context.”
