Youth development boost
Sports minister Erastus Uutoni has reiterated government's commitment to addressing the plight of young people.
The Nkurenkuru town council on Thursday donated a piece of land to the sports ministry for the construction of a multi-purpose youth centre.
Sports minister Erastus Uutoni says his ministry has budgeted N$5 million in the current financial year for a feasibility study and the fencing off of the plot.
He said an amount of N$24 million has been budgeted in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years for the construction of the facility.
It will consist of an administration block, ablution facilities, conference room, library, tailoring workshop, computer room, male and female dormitories, a kitchen and dining hall.
Uutoni explained that providing safe, structured and inclusive settings that focus on a broad range of developmental needs can best serve the needs of young people.
“The structured activities provide opportunities for skill-building and related improvements in specific self-competencies for positive peer interactions,” Uutoni said.
The government, through the Fifth National Development Plan (NDP5), outlined that youth are a valuable asset, as they will continue the development of the country, Uutoni said.
“Therefore, the ministry's plan to construct a multi-purpose youth centre at Nkurenkuru will have a dual function,” he added.
Uutoni, while recognising the many challenges youth are faced with daily, reiterated government's commitment to addressing the plight of young people.
“Our young people should rest assured that government, through this ministry, will try its level best to provide the support and guidance they need at all times,” the minister said. He further called on local authorities to take the lead in developing youth and recreational facilities.
