VSA open nuwe ambassade in Jerusalem

Amerika het gister sy nuwe ambassade in Jerusalem geopen – ’n stap wat deur Israel geloof en deur die Palestyne veroordeel word en tot massa-protesaksies kan lei.

Senior Amerikaanse amptenare, onder wie pres. Donald Trump se dogter, Ivanka, en haar man, Jared Kushner, het die opening bygwoon.

Trump se besluit om die ambassade uit Tel Aviv te skuif het Palestyne, wat aanspraak daarop maak dat Oos-Jerusalem ’n toekomstige hoofstad is, ontstel.

Israel beskou dit as ’n “ewige en onverdeelde” hoofstad.

’n Klein tussentydse ambassade sal uit die bestaande Amerikaanse konsulaatgebou in Jerusalem bedryf word.

’n Groter terrein sal later aangeskaf word wanneer die res van die ambassade na Tel Aviv skuif.

Trump sou die geleentheid in ’n video-opname toespreek.
