Die Verenigde Nasies se Bevolkingsfonds (UNFPA) het die besluit van die VN se Algemene Vergadering om 'n permanente forum te stig vir mense afkomstig uit Afrika, verwelkom.

“Geen land ter wêreld het nog die diep stelsels uitgewis van rasse-ongelykheid waaraan mense met 'n Afrika-afkoms onderwerp is nie. Dit is die gevolg van eeue van diskriminasie, onteiening en slawerny,” sê die UNFPA in 'n verklaring.

Die 193 lede van die Algemene Vergadering het eenparig die resolusie aanvaar wat die Permanente Forum van die VN vir mense van Afrika-afkoms tot stand te bring.

Die forum bestaande uit tien lede sal ten nouste met die VN se Menseregteraad in Genève saamwerk.

Die nuwe forum wat kom ná jare se beraadslagings en sal dien as 'n gespreksmeganisme vir mense van Afrika-afkoms en ander belanghebbendes, sê die UNFPA.

Die forum sal ook help met die opstel van 'n VN-deklarasie wat die eerste stap tot 'n wetlik bindende instrument vir die bevordering van die regte van mense van Afrika-afkoms sal wees.
