Teach democracy from an early age

Metusalem Neib writes: The aim of this suggestion is for the students/learners, youths and civil society to become acquainted with teachers education in Namibia and with the system of compulsory schooling and its curriculums. In order to guarantee a well-function constitutional democracy in Namibia it is essential that the curriculum of democracy is introduced as soon as possible in primary and secondary schools. The earlier a democracy is introduced in school programmes, the greater the likelihood of success in learning. Teachers should present democracy rules one at a time, and learners should practise examples of each one before going on to another. Students/learners, youths and civil society must be provided with means and methods to understand the democratic institution and mechanisms both nationally and internationally and best practice within the Republic of Namibia, which includes but are not limited to basic concepts of democracy, systems of democracy, political democracy in Namibia, cultural democracy in Namibia, economic and social democracy in Namibia, democratic election processes in Namibia, democracy research in Namibia, discussions on democracy in Namibia, political analyses, democracy and globalization. Democratic education will include current theories and development of democratic principles in an open and free society. Democracy is based on the will of citizens to take responsibility in society and on independent organizations whose aim is ensure the interests of the citizens. Students/learners youths and civil society needs freedom from external compulsion and oppression, hunger, ignorance and fear of the future. They must work on the abolition of the principle of hereditary succession in the ruling party and seek to replace it with a republic in which the citizens directly or indirectly elect the head of state and parliamentarians. As with all changes in the ruling party and opposition a change in the government into a true republic presupposes the support of a majority of the population.
