Internasionale Moedertaaldag word vandag onder die tema “Tale sonder grense” gevier. Dit is gemik op die bevordering van vreedsame gesprekvoering en die sosiale insluiting van alle mense. Klem word gelê op die erkenning van en betoon van eerbied aan linguistiese en kulturele diversiteit, omdat dit eenheid in samelewings bevorder. In Namibië word tot 30 tale gepraat, waarvan 14 ’n volledige ortografie, of spesifieke skryfstelsel het. Engels is Namibië se enigste nasionale taal, maar volgens die 2011-sensus is Oshiwambo (49%), Nama (11,3%), Afrikaans (10,4%) en Otjiherero (9%) die tale wat die algemeenste gepraat word.
