Egipte het reëls verskerp om voedselsubsidiekaarte te bekom.

Die aantal lede per familie wat kan voordeel trek, word nou beperk en inkomstelimiete word gestel in ‘n poging om die ekonomie te hervorm.

Egipte het in November tot ‘n US$12 miljard-lening van die Internasionale Monetêre Fonds ingestem, in ruil vir ‘n program waarvolgens subsidies verminder en belasting verhoog word. Daar word gehoop dat hierdie hervormings beleggers terug na die land sal lok wat ná die 2011-opstand landuit gevlug het.

Inflasie het skerp gestyg sedert die invoer-afhanklike Egipte in November die Egiptiese pond laat sweef het. Dit het meegebring dat die waarde van die wisselkoers byna gehalveer is en die bevolking meer afhanklik van gesubsidieerde ware soos brood, kookolie en suiker gemaak is. - Nampa/Reuters
