ROCOMAMAS – All Hail the Burger

by Leoni - Sweet tomatoes, oozing mayonnaise, pickles, crispy bacon and a heavenly 150g meat patty. There is something so elementary about a hamburger. Its warmth, that tangible feel of juices dripping between your fingers as you consume it, that makes us crave those delicate ingredients settled between two wholesome buns to perfection.
The history of the hamburger brims with mystery as many countries lay claim to its humble beginnings. Genghis Khan’s entourage made ground meat into a patty shape that was ideal for his army to eat one-handed while travelling. So it’s influences, and history, are bountiful. I shan’t proclaim to know much about it though, but I will promulgate that the hamburger has evolved rather deliciously.
Internationally, consumers are shifting away from the more commonly known fast food style burger served with sloppy fries and counterfeit meat. Rather, the hunt is on for something a little more sophisticated in taste and quality. Venues serving premium beef along with unique toppings and sauces are out-performing fast food versions of the beloved burger in a big way.
Enter the Gourmet Burger.
Envision white truffle infused Wagyu beef burger, smoked sea salt, shaved black truffles, Chinese Kaluga caviar, cave aged cheddar (yes, it’s a 16th century practice of maturing cheese in a cave!), a quail egg, and blini, all held together by a diamond encrusted toothpick. Too extravagant? It will only set you back USD$295 (N$3780). And my pal Google tells me it ain’t the most expensive burger out there either.
Thankfully, us Namibians don’t have to peer into barren wallets for a gratifying burger. RocoMamas at The Grove Mall in Windhoek forms part of an ever-following trend of RocoMamas restaurants in South Africa. Founded in 2013, this division of the Spur Corporation has taken off in leaps and bounds with a whopping 42 restaurants throughout South Africa. And one international restaurant – that’s us!
Now ask my son what he thinks about RocoMamas and you wont even get a response, you’ll just see drool.
His last burger consisted of a Double Smash Burger, Smoked Mayo, Bacon, Mozzarella and BBQ Sauce. I mean where else can you build your own hamburger? It’s like playing with Lego again – but with food!
So go concoct your own Smash Burger (available in 150g or 100g meat patties you can ‘double up’ on) or check out their Mofo Wings and get seriously messy while you’re at it.
And remember - All Hail the Gourmet Burger.
