Residents demand speed humps
There must be at least five speed humps to minimise the speeding of those who drive along that road.
A concerned group of young residents at Rundu called for the erection of speed humps along the Maria Mwengere road, especially in front of a local nightclub where a life was lost.
The residents marched from the local nightclub all dressed in black and holding a placard of the deceased towards the Rundu Town Council (RTC) where they handed over a petition to acting chief executive officer Sam Nekaro.
Three young men were run over in front of the nightclub along the Maria Mwengere road in a hit-and-run incident and one of them succumbed to the serious injuries he sustained.
The driver of the vehicle in the matter was arrested and denied bail on Monday when he made a brief appearance in the Rundu magistrate court.
Reading the petition of the concerned group, Moses Shikerete called on the RTC to send a team of road artisans to study the road.
“We recommend for speed humps along Maria Mwengere road, a goal we wish to see happen as soon as possible,” Shikerete said.
He said there must be at least three to five speed humps to minimise the speeding of those who drive along that road both during the day and night, adding that the humps will help control reckless driving among drivers.
Recommendations
Shikerete mentioned that the RTC management and community stakeholders can begin a formal process to identify priority locations and key strategies for improving pedestrian safety especially around drinking places where the risk is high.
“The RTC should also develop a resolution or policy statement in support of improving pedestrian safety at uncontrolled crossing locations,” they further proposed.
Another proposal the group listed is that RTC makes recommendations to the liquor board to make public the notices of objection against liquor licence applications.
Shikerete said this can be done by taking the notices of objection to the people at community meetings.
The group said they were also considering seeking a court interdict after consultations to find a solution that will see the nightclub in question relocated.
