Producing professional graduates
RDJ Consulting is an advisory consultancy to the energy, water and transport sectors with a focus on sustainable operations and renewable energy.
RDJ Consulting has been engaged in the training of graduates in the areas of energy and sustainability, thus helping prepare them for the “real-work market” through its internship programme.
Th internship programme is offered to students or graduates willing to gain experience in the market before getting employed.
Six interns graduated on 13 March 2020 at the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management. These interns were graduates from various tertiary institutions of Namibia.
The programme offers training and capacity building sessions, primary and secondary research opportunities in the real-world market, and many other opportunities for students from different fields of study.
The programme aims to stimulate innovation, which is key for self-employment, and to help interns to loosen up and think out of the box and gather enough knowledge through internal training and other events. This programme also aims at producing professional graduates who are ready for both the national and international markets.
The managing consultant and director of RDJ Consulting, David Jarrett, says this programme started in 2016 with just one intern.
“There has to be a blend of experience with youthfulness,” he says.
The need for the programme arose mainly in response to the Harambee Prosperity Plan, which emphasises the need to improve vocational education and training (VET) and increase the number of qualified VET trainers from 15 000 in 2015 to 25 000 by 2020. Furthermore, the desired outcomes of the plan are to encourage innovation amongst the youth of Namibia.
Sem Uutoni, who is the founder and executive director of African Pathfinder Leaders Initiative (APLI) and also the motivational speaker at the event, motivated the interns to go out there and be unapologetic.
“As you go out it is important that you add value to the economy or an individual,” he said.
Kina Indongo, who was an intern at RDJ last year and is now employed there, encouraged people who apply for internships to grab every opportunity they receive.
“Even if it's just to volunteer, go for it, for the knowledge you gain and the life-long lessons learnt,” she said.
