Pre-school gymnastics display
OVER 150 pre-school children gather annually towards the end of the year at the Jan Wilken Sport Complex to have a mass display of the development programme of the Walvis Bay gymnastics club.
Under the professional leadership of Roumi Kostin, also a coach for rhythmic gymnastics at the Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club, the pre-school children are taught many different skills with a basis of gymnastics.
The pre-school gymnastics (Fun gym) display brought over 400 spectators to the Jan Wilken Sport Complex last Wednesday, watching children as young as three years of age complete a series of skills. The skills included forward, backward and side rolls as well as a range of gross and fine motor skills using gymnastics apparatus. A concentration and rhythm routine of each age group (3-4 years; 4-5 years and 5 years and up) ended off the skill presentation to a standing applause!
?Our emphasis stays on the basic physical development of all our children,? says Roumi. Ricci Profitt, vice president of the Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club and also PRO of the Namibian Gymnastics Federation, said: ?The Walvis Bay Gymnastics club has some of the best gymnasts in Namibia, and I firmly believe that this development program has contributed greatly.
?Unfortunately our club cannot accommodate all the children to continue with formal gymnastics training. We hope that the schools will use the opportunity to learn from us and continue the development on school level. The NGF has all the necessary audio and visual material and is more than willing to assist any school interested in this programme.?
