Power planned for 36 schools

The ministry of mines and energy has allocated N$44 million to the electrification of 36 rural schools during the 2021/22 financial year.Motivating the ministry’s N$212.4 million budget for 2021/22 in the National Assembly on Friday, minister Tom Alweendo said the ministry has allocated N$62.7 million to the energy security supply programme, which focuses on securing a sufficient and reliable supply of sustainable electricity in order to reduce dependence on imports.Alweendo stated that under this programme, the ministry will oversee the implementation of three new Solar PV power plants with a production capacity of 45MW.The ministry managed to electrify 33 rural public institutions, such as schools and clinics, at a cost of N$42 million in the previous financial year.“We were also able to electrify more than 500 rural households at a cost of N$10 million. The National Oil Storage Facility project in Walvis Bay has been completed and handed over to our national oil company, Namcor, to operate it on behalf of the state.”NAMCORNamcor received their first shipment of fuel last December, he said, adding that the investment in this facility has significantly increased the national fuel storage capacity by 75 million litres, boosting stock holding capacity from 10 to 45 days.Alweendo said for this financial year, the ministry has allocated N$11.2 million to the petroleum security of supply programme, which ensures the security of petroleum supply and provides a conducive environment for the exploration of hydrocarbons in the country.“The ministry will do further work aimed at providing a conducive environment to attract and retain investors in the petroleum upstream sector. Additionally, the ministry will continue to regulate the downstream petroleum industry,” Alweendo said.He said there has been a concern about the proliferation of retail fuel stations that has the potential to threaten the sustainability of the sector and to address the concern, the ministry has reviewed its licensing guidelines and conditions.“The sector is also threatened by the illegal importation of fuel from Angola.
