Plans for Karibib VTC in infant stage

The vocational training centre planned for Karibib might only open next year, if funds allow.

Windhoek Vocational Training Centre (WVTC) manager, Paulus Haukongo, said the plans for the centre are in their infancy. He said they are busy creating a proposal which will be forwarded to the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) to seek funding.

The WVTC is facilitating the establishment of the centre.

When the opening of the centre was announced in 2017, WVTC indicated that they hoped to open this year, but due to the current economic climate in the country, this is not possible.

“The establishment of a VTC at Karibib is still an idea, even though a memorandum of understanding was signed with the town council of Karibib,” he said.



Criteria

Haukongo said the planning process includes programmes to be offered based on the NTA's criteria and how much money is needed for manpower and equipment.

He said his office has engaged with the mines to look into areas where skills are needed.

Haukongo further made it clear that the Karibib VTC will cater for youth of the town only in terms of enrolment. He said more than 15 students from that town are currently enrolled at the Windhoek Vocational Training Centre.

He said Karibib is an economic hub and close to the mines and the residents need skills that would help the town develop. - Nampa
