Ongwediva councillor wants more female representation in Oshana RC
ONGWEDIVA – Women should participate in the 2020 Regional and Local Authority Elections in large numbers so that more women can join the Oshana Regional Council.
Oshana Regional Councillor for the Ongwediva Constituency, Andreas Uutoni said this during International Women's Day celebrations of his constituency here on Wednesday.
He said the council lacks equal gender representation. It has one female councillor, Rosalia Shilenga of the Okatana Constituency. This has been the case since Independence in 1990.
Uutoni blamed the women for the trend, saying they do not avail themselves to be elected for regional decision-making bodies. Former councillor of the Ompundja Constituency, Lovisa Shikodhi was the only other female member of the council more than 10 years ago, before she was replaced by Adolf Uunona.
“Women are too slow in coming forth to take up leadership positions and to be part of the decision-making bodies in our region,” Uutoni said.
Delivering a motivational speech at the same event, local private doctor Elizabeth Kamati urged women to go from being spectators to become role players. “Move away from the blame game and be part of the solution,” Kamati urged.
In a statement presented on her behalf at the same event, Gender Equality and Child Welfare Minister, Doreen Sioka said Namibia now has more female Members of Parliament than before. Sioka expressed the hope that Namibia will achieve the Southern African Development Community Protocol on Gender and Development target of 50/50 women representation in Parliament soon.
