Omeya Members narrowly beat the Homeowners

The club south of Windhoek held one of its premiere events of the year last weekend.
The annual Omeya Members Cup golf tournament was played last Friday and Saturday. The popular contest between the 12-man Omeya Homeowners team and the Members team is the culmination of a qualifying series, the AfricaOnline Race to Omeya.

The Members emerged victorious by 16.5 points against 13.5, although it was not always smooth sailing.

The 24 players were treated to a professional golf event atmosphere which included a first tee setup as good as you will find on any professional golf tour, full kit outfits by Nike and a special touch on the range.

Friday saw two formats being played, betterball in the morning which was followed by the “sorry partner” format, namely foursomes. The Members Team secured the first 4 points in the betterball format with the Homeowners winning the last two matches.

Going into the afternoon foursomes, the Members Team had a two point lead. The Homeowners managed to make up on point in the afternoon Foursomes securing 3.5 points to the 2.5 points of the Members. Day 1 was concluded with the Members leading by a mere point.

On Saturday the first tee shot was struck at 08:00 with everything to play for. Day 2 saw yet another two formats with the betterball format in the morning and the singles format in the afternoon.

Once again the Members team blossomed in the betterball format, gaining another point over the Homeowners and going into the afternoon singles with 10 points against the 8 points of

the Members.

The Homeowners team came out all guns blazing, winning the first three games, but the middle order of the Members team changed things around, securing five points out of the next six matches.

The Members team's winning point came in match 10 with Jacques Bruwer beating Eugene Lofty-Eaton on the 16th hole.

The golf club's general manager Dan Zwiebel says: “I would like to compliment each and every player for the manner in which they competed this weekend. The sportsmanship was evident throughout the entire weekend, which is always a humbling sight.

“Thank you to all the supporters (especially the boerewors and pancake corner behind the 6th green) and to our co-sponsor, AfricaOnline.

“The Omeya Members Cup will grow from strength to strength as long as I am involved!”

NEDBANK CHALLENGE

Four lucky Windhoek enthusiasts enjoyed an all-expenses paid five-day trip to Sun City to attend the Nedbank Golf Challenge, known as Africa's Major.

Michael Durant, Tiaan Louw, Tertius van Vuuren and Ewald Steenkamp combined in buying two N$1 000 raffle tickets in the competition run by Omeya Golf Club. One of the tickets turned out to be the winner.

Durant said: “Omeya Golf Club, thank you for the trip of a lifetime. Rubbing shoulders with Gary Player, Rory McIlroy, Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio Garcia and many other international legends at the 2018 Nedbank Golf Challenge. We want to extend a special thanks to Nedbank Namibia, Air Namibia and Europcar who partnered with Omeya Golf Club to make this experience possible.

“I would definitely recommend supporting Omeya Golf Club in buying those raffle tickets before its too late. Lastly, a special thanks to Dan Zwiebel, who initiated this,” said Durant.
