Omega village gets third borehole
OMEGA - Missionaries from the Netherlands are drilling a third borehole at Omega village in the Kavango East Region to address the water crisis here.
Many of the villagers are elderly and have to walk 7 kilometres to get water, a missionary who asked to only be identified as 'Jan' told Nampa here on Monday.
The borehole will cater for around 60 households.
Jan said it is heart breaking to see pensioners carrying water over such a long distance.
“This is 2017, should things really still be done this way?” he asked.
The borehole is being drilled by Namibia Drilling Exploration at a cost of N$220 000.
Jan said they started drilling in November last year.
When the reporter arrived at the scene, the drilling company was busy testing the water.
Very soon the village will also have solar power, Jan said.
One of the residents of Omega, Lukas Mukosho, said they are pleased about this development because many homes will now have access to water.
He said they might even use it for agricultural purposes because many homes have this year started gardens and planted mahangu in their fields. - Nampa
