Mud, hills and spills at MTN off-road triathlon

THE 2011 MTN Business off-road triathlon, hosted by otb Sport, took place at Friedenau dam last Sunday. With over 230 entrants and around 400 spectators, both the land and dam (which is at 100%) were brimming over. The main event consisted of a 1.2 km swim, a 23.5 km cycle and 8.1 km run.

Participants could also partake in the shorter ?Sprint? or ?Mini? event. MTN Business representative, Ingram van Heerden said, ?As a sponsor we are delighted with the growth of the event and will definitely continue to support this exciting and tough event.?

The main event was won by 42-year-old Patrick de Goede in a time of 2:12:16. Second overall and winner of his age category was 18-year-old Oliver Freyer in 2:17:11. Oliver was about 30 seconds behind Patrick on the swim. The bike section was neck and neck with the two finishing the stage just inches apart. The road race was run at a tough pace.

The very talented Oliver put pressure on Patrick, currently Namibia?s top middle distance triathlete. But years of experience paid off and Patrick managed to build up a lead on the off-road run that took the athletes through rivers and across koppie tops.

Patrick said afterwards: ?It was really good to finish my season on a high note at a local event, with family and friends there. I have worked hard since May 2010 to elevate my game, and the hard work has paid off. The MTN off-road triathlon is as tough as anything we race abroad, and always brings out the best in all the competitors.
?I was really stoked that Oliver Freyer had such a strong race, he had me worried for a good while. With a bit more experience and guidance, he will grow into a formidable triathlete. Once again, OTB Sport has put on a classy event and judging by the numbers in attendance, one that is going from strength to strength!?

Vera Adrian was first overall in the female main event in a time of 2:35:52. Elke Jagau was overall second and winner of her age category in a time of 2:49:05. Charmaine Shannon was third overall and second in her age category in 2:52:09. The sprint event consisted of a 600 m swim, a 10 km cycle and 2.7 km run, and was won by Andy Chase in a time of 54:49. Hans du Toit was overall second and winner of his age category (57:58).

Stefan van Doorn was overall third in the male sprint and second in his age category. The U13 sprint was won by the very talented triathlete, Herbert Peters. Event organisers OTB Sport said they expected Herbert to go from strength to strength not just on the local, but also international scene.

Herbert participated in the 2011 African Continental Mountain bike Challenge in February and came second in the U14 category; he also came second in his category in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay cycle tour in March. On Sunday, Herbert clocked another win in the U13 sprint in a time of 1:00:28.

In second place was Luke Brinkmann (1:12:06) and in third position was Luke Munting (1:19:26). First overall in the U13 female section of the sprint was Genevieve Weber in a time of 1:08:57. Second overall was Bertha Theron. Ezanne van den Berg was third overall and second in her age category in a time of 1:14:14. Full results and photos can be viewed on www.otbsport.com
