Kornelia Shilunga attends German-African Energy Forum in Hamburg
Last week Kornelia Shilunga, Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, travelled to Germany with two officials in order to attend the 10th German-African Energy Forum in Hamburg.
The annual forum was organised by the German-African Business Association, which represents German companies and institutions that have an economic interest in Africa.
The event was attended by over 400 representatives from the public and private sectors and included participants from 41 African countries.
Namibia featured prominently during the forum with the Deputy Minister chairing a country session on Namibia at which she informed an interested audience about the latest developments in the Namibian energy sector and presented current projects and opportunities for foreign investors. Hon. Shilunga was also invited to participate in various panel discussions, including a high level panel with ministers from Sudan and Ethiopia on “Finding the perfect Energy Mix for Africa”.
The presence of a Namibian Deputy Minister generated a high level of interest among the companies at the forum, leading to several private side meetings with senior managers of prominent international players such as Siemens, STEAG and ABB who were eager to explore possibilities for future cooperation. Shilunga expressed satisfaction with the Namibian participation at the Hamburg event: “The German-African Energy Forum gave us the opportunity to share information about the power generation projects that we are currently pursuing. The response was very positive and the Ministry of Mines and Energy will continue to use these types of international platforms to attract potential investors to Namibia.”
Following the conference, the Namibian delegation went on a tour of companies from the renewable energy sector at the Hanover Fair, the world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology.
This year, the fair was officially opened by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and American President Barack Obama and featured 5200 exhibitors from 75 countries.
According to Dr. Mekondjo Kaapanda-Girnus, Commercial Counsellor at the Namibian Embassy in Berlin, “the German-African Energy Forum and Hanover Fair are truly international events which allow Namibian institutions and companies to meet potential investors from all over the world and learn about new innovative renewable energy products specifically designed for developing markets.1396986481
