The newly established Namibia Golf Tour is hosting its first Qualifying School for the 2017-2018 season. Over 40 golfers (both non amateur and amateur) are set to battle it out.

The event will take place from 09:00 tomorrow until Sunday at the Windhoek Golf and Country Club. The tournament will be decided over three rounds (54 holes) of 36 holes tomorrow and 18 holes on Sunday.

The aim of the Qualifying School is for the Tour to determine the total number of players that will be participating in the various tournaments to be hosted over the next 12 months.

Currently, Namibia has only about 14 professional golf players. The aim is to increase that figure to about 32 players and by so doing create more competition and value for sponsors and supporters. In addition, having a local tour creates opportunities for Namibian professional golfers to showcase their talent locally and thereby attract more investments into the game, both at amateur and professional level.

SPONSORS AND PURSE AMOUNT

Dundee Precious Metals as a major global player in the mining and downstream sectors has agreed to partner the Namibia Golf Tour as the main sponsor of this event.

The intent is to extend this partnership over a period of three years. While there are other tournament sponsors that will cover all other planned tournaments, Dundee has taken the bull by the horns to become the first sponsor of this tour programme.

The total sponsorship for the event is N$45 000 this year.

At the end of the tournament, 24 to 26 players would qualify for membership cards of the tour and thus receive playing privileges for the year. On top of that, the top twelve players would receive prize money ranging from N$10 000 to N$1 000.

The qualifying players would receive their cards and prizes on Sunday around 13:30 at a function to take place in the Members' Lounge at the Windhoek Golf & Country Club.

A number of local prominent personalities and senior leaders of government are expected to attend this function.

The Namibia Golf Tour is managed by Gerhard van der Merwe (chairman), Hafeni Nghinamwaami (director: business development), Leevi Shoopara (director: administration and finance), Andreas Shoombe (director: operations) and Steve Basson (director: golf and rules).
