Govt data portal no jobs haven
The labour ministry has called on all designated employers to report vacancies on the Namibia Integrated Employment Information System as legally required.
Jo-Maré Duddy – More than 79 000 Namibians were looking for work on government’s database for jobseekers yesterday morning, where only 81 available opportunities were posted.
The ministry of labour, industrial relations and employment creation issued a statement on Monday, calling all designated employers (DEs) to report vacancies on the Namibia Integrated Employment Information System (NIEIS) as legally required.
The Employment Services Act of 2011 requires all employers in Namibia with 25 or more employees to report vacancies or new positions to the Employment Service Bureau (ESB) at the ministry, which then distributes the information. The law was implemented in 2015.
The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) last conducted a labour force survey in 2018, pegging the country’s official unemployment rate at 33.4%. That meant more than 364 000 people were without jobs in 2018, 48.5% of them youth.
The Namibia Integrated Employment Information System (NIEIS) is a statutory database that collects, stores and updates information concerning the names, qualifications and occupation of jobseekers, vacancies in the labour market, as well as specialised skills and qualifications of Namibian citizens and permanent residents.
Direct registration
“All DEs must notify the ESB of vacancies or new positions in their establishment as stipulated in the Employment Act Number 8 of 2011,” the ministry said in its statement.
“The NIEIS will help employers to employ registered jobseekers directly from the system and employers are required to report back on the recruitment or vacancies that have been filled within 30 days after the closing of such vacancies,” it said.
The ministry said the NIEIS It helps employers to have access to a variety of online résumés and the system enables them to match the jobseekers to available opportunities.
“In addition, the registered jobseekers are also able to manage their online recommences, search and apply for available opportunities online and have them updated, permanently stored and available for viewing by interested employers,” the ministry said. – Additional reporting by Nampa
