Golden earnings from gems, metals
Namibia last year exported diamonds, gold and precious metals to the tune of N$20.8 billion, 9% more than in 2016. According to the latest data released by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) yesterday, diamonds, gold and precious metals formed 33% of the country’s total exports of nearly N$63.55 billion in 2017. The previous year, these commodities’ share was 29%. Fish and ores enjoyed the second and third biggest chunk of Namibia’s exports last year, generating N$8.96 billion and N$8.08 billion in foreign earnings respectively. Copper blister brought in about N$5.4 billion. Namibia’s imports for 2017 amounted to N$87.99 billion, leaving the country with a trade balance deficit of nearly N$24.45 billion.
