During this time of fear and uncertainty, the Gobabis junior town council rose to the challenge to fulfill their responsibility to their community.
Earlier in the year, the council, of which four students are from Gobabis Gymnasium, donated food packages to different households in need, courtesy of Shoprite.
Together with Namibian Partnership Solutions, they engaged with the vulnerable households, sharing a meal and discussing their struggles.
The council further hosted a movie night for the children’s shelter, making the day special to the children later that day, and assisted with The Light of The Children charity project by cooking for and serving the needy children from the project.
Some of the council’s latest projects include a debate as well as an outreach and donation project to the informal settlements on 2020.
The topic of the debate hosted by the JTC was “Should abortion be legalised or not’’, this was intended to raise awareness on abortion among the youth as well as “Was the government’s decision right to send students back to school’’.
High schools from Gobabis battled it out and Gobabis Gymnasium was the victor. Gobabis JTC mayor, Jimmy Visser, said they were empowered by the poverty and struggles which vulnerable communities of Gobabis face.
They want to empower and motivate the youth and children of informal settlements. Jimmy added that the community is supportive and appreciates their efforts and has shown a lot of interest in their projects.
In addition, the junior mayor said he is very proud of their council and what they have achieved.
The long hours and hard work Gobabis JTC have put into its community is much appreciated. The year is not over yet and we can’t wait to see what Gobabis’s Junior Town Council has in store for Gobabis.
