The Namibia Bass Angling Association (NBAA) hosted the first double-header event for the year earlier this month.

The first tournament was on 8 February, followed by the second one on 9 February, both held at Oanob Dam.

There were 18 anglers taking part in the event, with four participants being juniors. According to a statement released by the association, Oanob had received water inflow just a few days prior to the event raising water levels from 37% to close to 50%.

“Rising water levels, which in most cases go hand in hand with muddied-up water, do not make for the ideal fishing conditions; adding a full moon to that equation definitely meant the fishing was going to be tough.

“We are however thankful for every drop of rain and this inflow has a tremendous positive effect on our fishery in the long term,” said Andrew Hall from NBAA.

Hall further added that this did not deter anglers wanting to compete for the honour to represent their country at the 2021 Region V event.

“The heaviest fish weighed on the day was caught by Jurgen Geiger and weighed in at 1.945 kg. Geiger won with a tremendous lead and a total bag catch of 9.265 kg. We are very proud to have had the juniors attend our first national tournament and hope to see them at the rest of our events for the year. We would like to thank our sponsors Bank Windhoek and Deepcatch Trading (Score Energy) without whom all of this would not be possible,” added Hall.

The top five results for 8 February are as follows:

1. Jurgen Geiger - 5 fish, 9.265 kg

2. Thinus Williams - 5 fish, 6.380 kg

3. Neil Engelbrecht - 5 fish, 4.056 kg

4. James van Rooyen - 5 fish, 2.760 kg

5. Neels van Tonder - 3 fish, 3.583 kg

Junior results:

1. Alexander Sowden - 2 fish, 1.626 kg

2. Christiaan Sowden -2 fish, 1.513 kg

3. DaNell Engelbrecht - 3 fish, 0.860 kg

A total of 38 fish made it to the scales.

The added fishing pressure of Saturday made for even tougher fishing on 9 February with a total of only 26 fish being weighed in. A total of 13 anglers attended the tournament on Sunday of which 3 were juniors.

The heaviest fish weighed on Sunday was caught by James van Rooyen and weighed in at 2.803 kg.

The top 5 results for 9 February are as follows:

1. Thinus Williams - 4 fish, 4.126 kg

2. James van Rooyen - 3 fish, 4.244 kg

3. Max Pieper - 3 fish, 4.053 kg

4. Neil Engelbrecht - 3 fish, 3.471 kg

5. Alec Williams - 2 fish, 3.110 kg

Junior results:

1. Alexander Sowden - 4 fish, 1.640 kg

2. Christiaan Sowden - 1 fish, 0.222 kg
