Fistball season ends in tight affair
BARELY a week after Namibia hosted the World Club Championship in Windhoek, the local fistball season concluded in Swakopmund. The national cup competition was hosted at the SFC Sport Club and saw action in two categories: the National league A and National league B. There were few surprises among the winners.
In the National league A, SKW 1 added more silverware to their trophy cabinet by beating Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) 1 in the final. The game turned out to be a tight affair. Both sides displayed classy fistball in very windy and cold conditions. Especially the young CFC side pulled out all the stops to keep the more experienced SKW side on a tight leash.
At the end SKW had the better nerves and managed to cling to a narrow four point lead. The surprise package of the day was a team of the SFC which also participated in the National league A. The Swakopmund side showed a lot of talent but will need more exposure at this level to make a lasting impact.
Reigning National league B champions CFC2 managed a further win this season. They beat the youthful SFC 2 convincingly in the final of the B league cup competition. CFC 2 proved to be the more balanced side while the young players in the SFC side struggled to handle the pressure of a final.
The Fistball Association of Namibia can however take heart from the way under-18 players are being exposed to senior fistball. This shows that the clubs are committed to youth development at a grass roots level.
At the prize-giving not only the teams of the day were rewarded. Thorsten Schmidt-Dumont (CFC) and Sven Wiedenroth (SKW) were rewarded for stellar performances during the National league A final with the trophy of “Player of the day”.
FAN president Michael Baas also honoured the best Namibian players. A panel of club representatives voted U18 national team captain Thorsten Schmidt-Dumont as youth player of the year, while Christoph Kubirske was named senior player of the year for the third year running.
