Falcon claim memorable win
The hosts made sure that the Wanderers lost both matches to the travelling Rehoboth teams this season.
Andrew Poolman – FNB Reho Falcon delivered the biggest upset of the weekend in the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) premier league when the previously winless team at the bottom of the log shocked second-placed FNB Wanderers 31-22 at the Dr Lemmer field in Rehoboth on Saturday.
The team in black played their cards just right on the day, leading 20-17 at the break and holding off everything the Windhoek team could throw at them to claim an emotional and much-needed victory for the proud but struggling club.
Wanderers, who scored four tries to three to ensure they take at least one bonus point, will rue a number of lost opportunities they had in both halves. Hooker and captain Stefan Hattingh went over the goal line in the first half with a strong individual drive, but was adjudged to have lost the ball in the tackle.
Reho Falcon had the services of six influential club players from Southwestern Districts (SWD) for the last two months – who ended up scoring almost all their points in Saturday’s memorable win.
Following Friday’s announcement of a moratorium on contact sports due to Covid-19 for the entire month of June, the six South Africans are likely to return home this week, while the remaining locals will look to build on the transformative momentum they have helped to create.
The kicking accuracy of SWD flyhalf Legan Moos was a decisive factor on the day, scoring four penalties and two conversions to add to tries by SWD fullback Curtley Scheepers (two) and centre Anthony Brandt.
For Wanderers, speedy left wing Warren Ludwig twice added to his try tally for the season, while Hattingh - taking over the leadership from the injured Jamie Joseph - and centre Bernie Hugo also scored tries.
Hugo left the field shortly after his early try due to an ankle injury and was replaced by Ethan Beukes.
Jacques Theron, playing in the number 10 jersey due to injuries to Wanderers’ other flyhalves, converted only one of their four tries.
Referee Danie Koen gave a team warning to both sides after about an hour’s play that the next player to use foul language would be sent off. No card was, however, shown during the highly contested 80 minutes.
Saturday’s other premier league results:
Log leaders FNB Unam beat FNB Kudus 29-8 at Walvis Bay to extend their lead, while FNB Rehoboth made a successful trip to the home of defending 2019 title holders Trustco United to win 42-21, scoring seven tries in the process. Furthermore, FNB Grootfontein came from behind with the final move of the match to claim a narrow 28-27 result against the visiting FNB Western Suburbs.
