Dining in Windhoek
@1humblepalate - A great dining experience goes beyond the quality of the ingredients or the way your favourite meal is prepared.
It reaches to the extent of the quality of service and the environment you are dining in. More often than not, people classify different eateries and “box” them in a niche. The two restaurants profiled here break this mold by adding more to their menu than what they are traditionally known to offer patrons.
Peppercorn
With Namibia being amazing “cattle country,” the availability of top grade beef is never in short supply.
Famed for its steaks and amazing grills, Peppercorn restaurant is a true carnivore and meat lover’s destination. Peppercorn’s pride and joy is its chateaubriand, a tender piece of prime Namibian beef fillet, prepared to perfection and then served flambé style. The dish doesn’t just leave you satisfied, it redefines the whole dining experience. The theatrical presentation of the beef gets your palate excited and eager to try a brandy-infused fillet of beef made to order. The house mashed potatoes as a side order complement the dish very well. If you are counting the calories, the steamed fresh vegetables of the day or the Greek salad are available as other options.
But Peppercorn is not limited to just meat dishes and big eats only. It is a dynamic steakhouse that offers more options to diners, in a real “Surf, Flight and Turf” style. The chicken and fish options are also quite satisfying in flavour, whilst the portions remain generous. The Kingklip Thermidor, regarded as the ultimate seafood dish, stands proud as the ideal white meat dish to enjoy. A lovely fillet of kingklip is topped with mussels, prawn bits and shrimp, bathed in a garlic butter sauce and covered in cheese, then grilled and served. The fish remains succulent and fresh, and with all the extras gives you a true taste of the ocean.
Go anytime of the week. The restaurant has a large capacity to host many diners, with a big staff complement to ensure you are well catered for.
Undercover Tip: Choose one of the more secluded booths closer to the door if you are looking for a quieter evening. This remains one of the best places offering value for money, especially for large groups.
John Dory’s
Namibia’s coastal waters contain a bounty of seafood, and John Dory’s has made it its mandate to ensure that all patrons enjoy the freshest seafood the ocean has to offer.
With a large variety of options, ranging from traditional hake and chips to the more striking dishes, you can fully enjoy seafood at John Dory’s, regardless of your preference. The sushi menu was set up to ensure that every bite is memorable, with freshly prepared ingredients, masterly crafted by expertly trained sushi chefs.
The Hake Thermidor, a must-try according to operator Dosantos, is a hake fillet topped with cheese, mushroom, mussels, prawns and shrimp, and served with pumpkin and creamed spinach. Packed with amazing flavour, the dish is surprisingly filling. Add a glass of your favourite white wine and you have a winning dish. Choosing between the Hake Thermidor and the Kingklip Thermidor is rather difficult, so try both and decide for yourself.
John Dory’s offers more than just great seafood. The menu has many other options, prepared with great attention to detail. These include the Rib and Chicken combo: Lemon and herb chicken accompanied by barbeque ribs - a true feast of the culinary senses. “I like how you can enjoy a variety of dishes here and they are so affordable,” said Helena, a John Dory’s customer.
It is ideal to go on a Tuesday. Mid-week restaurant visits ensure you get undivided attention from more than just one server at times.
Undercover Tip: The seating area upstairs is popular with younger customers. Ask your waitron for seats there if you have little ones accompanying you.
