Desert Jewels draw against Singapore
The Desert Jewels drew against better-ranked Singapore at the M1 Nations Cup, which is currently underway.
The 28th ranked Singapore battled hard to earn a 54-54 draw with Namibia in their opening game at the OCBC Arena on Sunday.
An evenly-matched first quarter ended with the scores level at 12-12.
Several sloppy passages of play from Singapore in the second quarter allowed 33rd ranked Namibia to take the lead and go into halftime with the score at 25-23.
But Singapore restored parity after a three-goal run at the beginning of the third stanza, and a determined display by the hosts saw them overturn the deficit to end the quarter 39-38.
The teams were neck-and-neck during a pulsating final quarter that went down to the final minute. Trailing 54-53 with just seconds remaining, captain Charmaine Soh sank a shot to salvage a draw for Singapore.
“The draw is a confidence booster for the team. The ladies can do it. They just need to remain focused and continue their form,” said Rebekka /Goagoses, vice-president of Netball Namibia. This year's edition marks Namibia's return to the tournament for the first time since 2012. They will be looking to improve on their third-place finish seven years ago.
Namibia were scheduled to play Ireland before going to print yesterday.
They will play the Cook Islands tomorrow, as well as Papua New Guinea. They will then face Botswana on Friday.
The tournament ends on 26 October.
