Art teacher at St. Goerges

“I enjoy my learners so much and have a really good relationship with most of them” – Jerrica Bartlette

When and why did you decide to become a teacher?

I became a teacher in February 2020, two months before Covid-19 hit. I was offered the art teacher position at St George’s and it is honestly the dream job I didn’t know I wanted.

Can you tell us your journey towards becoming a teacher?

Being a teacher was never part of my plan, but my degrees opened that door for me and so did my coaching experience.

What has been the highlight of your teaching career thus far?

Honestly, finding a job I genuinely love to do.

What are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am a hockey player and coach so that pretty much takes up any extra time I have now that contact sports are allowed again.

What lessons have you learnt from your learners?

I have learnt that working with children of different ages requires a lot of patience.

What is the one thing that keeps you going every day?

I really enjoy St George’s. The staff are great and so supportive and, as previously mentioned, my learners. There are days where waking up before 07:00 is really not ideal but when I get to work, there is always a group of kids who find a way to make me laugh.

What are some of the challenges you face as a teacher?

Besides the obvious online experience since last year, the hardest thing I’ve faced is if my learners get bad marks from Cambridge, I feel I may have let them down by not trying to motivate and guide them more.

What is the best part about being a teacher?

It might sound cliché, but the best part of the job really is the children. I enjoy my learners so much and have a really good relationship with most of them.
