German wing at Ongwediva campus
The German wing, part of the third phase in the construction of the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology at Unam's José Eduardo dos Santos Campus in Ongwediva, was officially inaugurated.
Construction of the new building for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering started in 2015. The building will be ready for use in October 2017. Funding was also provided for the improvement of the teaching facilities through additional workshops as well as the social infrastructure for the students on campus. German Cooperation contributed a total of N$200 million for the construction works through its Development Bank KfW.
Unam contributes another N$110 million, which amounts to a total project cost of N$310,7 million. Currently, 300 students are enrolled at the faculty. The new facilities and infrastructure erected through the cooperation will substantially help to improve and increase the qualification and number of Namibian civil engineers. German Cooperation, through GIZ, also has assisted Unam in the development of Bachelor and Master Degree programmes and the accreditation process of their programmes, as well as the procurement of laboratory equipment.
Lecturers from German universities have been invited as lecturers at Unam and student exchanges with German partner universities have been organised in order to foster cooperation and learning.
