Sanlam Junior Tournament gives young players a platform
Be better than your last game
As tennis players prepare for the Junior ITF tournament, the Sanlam Junior Tournament offers crucial exposure.
The Sanlam Junior Tournament saw over 70 young tennis players bring their A-game this past weekend.
“The competitive energy is the most important part of it, because one thing that you want to see, especially as a coach, is the kids really pushing themselves and enjoying it for the most part,” says the tournament director, Ndimiso Moyo.
He encourages players not to be defined by their last game. “Keep your head up, whether you win or lose, the next tournament could be somebody else’s day. You need to keep a positive mindset. If you win, motivate yourself to practise more and maintain that level,” he says.
Moyo notes that the Sanlam Junior Tournament serves as a preparation platform for the Junior ITF (International Tennis Federation) Tournament in May this year, that will see 27 countries participating.
He hopes that this tournament will equip players to work towards improvement. “I would like for them to take building blocks with them. I would like them to improve and always be better than their last game,” he says.
Raica Coelho and Elze Stears beat out Zoe Bronkhorst and Dominique Theron in the U/25 women’s doubles.
However, when it came to the singles division, Stears managed to triumph over Coelho.
In the U/25 men’s division, Risto Shikongo claimed victory in the ½ playoff.
Leandre Louw and Minenhle Moyo emerged victorious in the U/16 doubles, however, Louw would lose her place in the singles at the semi-finals against Zoe Bronkhorst.
In the boys’ U/16 division, Ruan Calitz and Juan Kuhn fought hard for their win over Jonathan Fundisi and Antonio Tchivanda.
Calitz and Kuhn both managed a win alongside Stephan Koen and Oliver Leicher in the singles division.
Hiturepi Kahuikee and Susanna van der Walt clinched victory in the U/14 girls’ doubles. Van der Walt managed a win in the singles division alongside Nieves Borggreve, Hilya Campbell and Minenhle Moyo.
Abraham Alemu and Eduam Schollij managed to clear the competition in the doubles division for the U/14 boys.
Both managed to score their names in the singles division alongside Johan Theron and Lian Kuhn.
