Walvis Bay gymnastics gears up

GYMNASTICS equipment worth N$80 000 arrived at the Jan Wilken Sport Complex last week. This internationally approved apparatus is part of the ongoing support of the municipality towards the development of the youth.

“The positive relationship between the municipality of Walvis Bay and the Namibian Gymnastics Federation (NGF) is evident,” says Valereis Geldenhuys Venter, president of the NGF.

“We are hosting the first ever – and also the biggest ever – championships in Namibia and the Municipality understood the need for more equipment.

“The municipality of Walvis Bay has put us in a perfect position to host more international competitions of this calibre and every sector of Namibia will benefit in the long run.”

Twelve countries will send over 500 competitors, coaches, judges and other dignitaries to the competition.

“Hopefully next time around we will increase even these numbers,” she said.

More apparatus is on its way and will arrive in Walvis Bay within the next two weeks. The first tumbling strip, to the value of more than N$100 000, will be the only internationally approved gymnastics strip in Namibia and according to Valereis Namibian gymnastics coaches are looking forward to developing this sport. “

We have many talented children in our country and with the support of our municipality, they have the opportunity to be coached and developed,” said Vesselin Kostin, head coach of the Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club and president of the trampoline and tumbling section of the NGF.

“This truly is the best municipality in Namibia – they have a vision and make sure that it becomes a reality.”
