THE national girl’s under-17 football team suffered a 5-0 defeat against South Africa in Daveyton, Johannesburg on Saturday, which meant the end of their chances of making it to the 2012 FIFA Women U-17 World Cup.

Coming into the match, the Namibians played a 1-1 draw in Windhoek a fortnight ago and all was set for an interesting return match at the Sinaba Stadium.

But in the end the South Africans proved too strong as they scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-1 aggregate win into the second round of the African World Cup qualifiers.

South Africa’s Mosili Makhaoli scored her side’s first before first leg goal-scorer Caryn van Reyneveldt added a second to give the host a 2-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Three minutes later Makhaoli scored her second of the day and South Africa’s third, and that’s how it stayed until the break.

Amanda November scored South Africa’s fourth goal in the 70th minute, with the final goal coming just two minutes from the final whistle from the captain Nomvula Kgoale.

South Africa will now face the winner between Ghana and Cameroon. The 2012 FIFA under-17 Women’s World Cup will be played in Azerbaijan from 22 September to 13 October.
