Bank Windhoek warns about latest phishing scam

© Republikein

BANK Windhoek has again issued a warning regarding phishing mails being sent to the bank’s Internet Banking users. Phishing is the process by which someone obtains your private information through devious means in order to fraudulently assume another person’s identity. As previously communicated, criminals have started an intensive phishing campaign on Namibian banks to lure clients to a fake website where they are requested to provide information on their accounts, their debit cards and identifica¬tion. In the latest e-mail sent to clients under the subject title “Improved Card Security”, a legitimate notice about Bank Windhoek’s recent systems upgrade is used by fraudsters to lure customers into their net.

Cus¬tomers recognize the topic and often don’t suspect any fraudulent activity behind this. Clients are re-quested not to react to these mails, even if they look authentic. Bank Windhoek will under no circumstances communicate personal information with clients via e-mail, nor will clients be requested to submit confidential information to the Bank.

Client s shoul d never click on a link in an e-mail requesting them to update or verify or upgrade their account details. If you are unsure about the validity of an e-mail, delete or ignore the e-mail and contact the bank as soon as possible to report the e-mail. Bank Windhoek will continue to cre¬ate awareness on phishing scams to protect clients from becoming victims.

Please note that Bank Windhoek will not accept responsibility for financial loss if a client has given his personal information out of free will to a fraud¬ster. I f you have received any suspicious e-mails relating to Bank Windhoek, contact Bank Windhoek’s Electronic Channel Division at 061 299 1881, or 061 299 1882, or send an e-mail to ibank@bankwindhoek. com.na.
