President Hifikepunye Pohamba cheers a crowd of thousands of SWAPO party members, supporters and sympathizers at a rally held at Sangwali village in the Linyanti Constituency of the Caprivi region last week.

KATIMA MULILO. – President Hifikepunye Pohamba has dismissed reports that the Caprivi has been one of the regions most neglected by the Swapo government.

Addressing a Swapo rally attended by thousands of the ruling party’s supporters and members at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex on Saturday, Pohamba said the Caprivi is among the regions that have benefited in many ways from the implementation of policies initiated by the Swapo government.

These, according to him, include the building and expansion of schools, hospitals and clinics, roads, affordable houses and delivery of potable water and electricity, amongst many projects.

The Head of State explained that the Caprivi region, being strategically located, has seen a lot of investment that boosted the region’s economy, including investment in the Katima Mulilo Industrial Park and the Zambezi Waterfront.

A modern market was also built for the residents of Katima Mulilo to enable emerging entrepreneurs to produce and market their products to the public.

“I am happy that the Caprivi region has seen a lot of development in terms of new health facilities, the upgrading of existing facilities and a broad spectrum of health services,” the President said.

The Namibian leader said the Swapo government will continue to improve the existing infrastructure, and build new ones in line with the needs of communities and in accordance with the National Development Plans.

Pohamba called upon Namibian refugees at the Dukwe refugee camp in Botswana to come back home, saying the Namibian government is ready to welcome them.

He furthermore called on all Swapo party members to campaign peacefully and to resist any provocation from opposition parties.

During the rally, a former vice-president of the Republikeinse Party (RP), Geofrey Chilinda, publicly joined Swapo.

Chilinda also resigned as an RP councillor for Katima Mulilo town council, and as a member of RP on 30 September this year.

Rally for Democracy and Progress’ (RDP) member Muchangani Chikusi also joined the ruling party at the rally.

The two new members were received and given the ruling party’s membership cards by Pohamba.
