Chartered and commercial and financial accountants sorely needed

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (“ICAN”) was established in 1990 as a national umbrella body that strives to advance the theory and practice of accounting in the country and to maintain a high standard of professional conduct and integrity.

The Institute in its role as national accounting standard setter plays a vital role in ensuring that generally accepted accounting practice in Namibia meets international benchmarks and that chartered accountants are qualified and able to meet the needs of investors, entrepreneurs and business enterprises in the fields of accounting, reporting and financial advisory services.

A strong and active Institute is vital to enhancing the competitive edge of the national economy and ICAN’s role in maintaining accounting and professional standards is one that ICAN takes very seriously.

ICAN is a member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), and as such promotes the compliance by ICAN members with all international accounting standards. The institute is also a member of ECSAFA, the Eastern, Central and Southern African Federation of Accountants, which serves as a regional representative forum for the discussion of matters of common interest relating to the accounting profession and the CEO of ICAN, Mr Koos du Toit, is currently the President of ECSAFA having been elected to that office in April 2009.

Only 311 chartered accountants service an economy of over two million people and there is a tremendous need for more professional accountants to provide sufficient accounting resources for a developing economy.

ICAN regularly visits schools and institutions of tertiary education to inform pupils and students about the profession while it also supports the UNAM Accounting Society which annually visits schools in outlying areas promoting accountancy as a career choice.

Kommersiële en finansiële rekenmeesters ook broodnodig
 
Die CFA (Namibia) het ongeveer 26 jaar gelede in Suid-Afrika ontstaan, maar is sedert Januarie 2005 onafhanklik van die buurland en bedryf nou ‘n eie kantoor.

Die Instituut bestaan uit geregistreede rekenmeesters in die praktyk, in die besigheidsektor, die Regering en akademie.

Die CFA se doelstellings is om rekeningkunde te bevorder; professionele gedrag van rekenmeesters te bevorder en te beheer en meer spesifiek die integriteit, objektiwiteit, professionele mededinging, vertrouensposisie en tegniese standaarde asook verhoudings met ander institute te bevorder en veral om toekomstige rekenmeesters se opleiding te beheer.

Hul primêre doel is om te verseker dat lede voldoen aan die professionele gedragskodes van die Instituut. Sonder behoorlike beheer en professionele gedrag is dit onmoontlik om gesonde verslaggewing en verantwoordelikheid van entiteite te bepaal.

Dit is belangrik dat die staat sowel as die algemene publiek, kan staatmaak op die dienste wat gelewer is. Die sakesekor maak sakebesluite gegrond op die werk van rekenmeesters.

Daar is tans ‘n geweldige tekort aan opgeleide, gekwalifiseerde rekenmeesters in die land. Soos reeds genoem, is daar oor die twee miljoen mense van wie ongeveer 400 000 belastingbetalers in die land is.

Daar net sowat 95 rekenmeesters en 311 ouditeurs om hulle van diens te voorsien. Aaneenlopende ondersoeke van die staat en die behoefte van finansiële instellings om inligting van hul kliënte te kry, is ‘n onmoontlike taak vir rekenmeesters om hul kliënte effektief te diens.

Die private en openbare sektore moet bewus gemaak word van die tekort aan rekenmeesters in die land en die gevolge daar- van. Ons moet saam daarna streef om die aantal nuwe rekenmeesters wat tot die bedryf toetree, te verhoog.

Die Instituut is ook ‘n lid van ECSAFA, the Eastern, Central and Southern African Federation of Accountants en is trots om lid te wees van Team Namibia. CFA is trots op hul geakretiteerde opleidingsentrums. CFA lede regoor die hele land beman 20 indiens-opleidingsentrums.

Enige persoon wat belangstel om ‘n geregistreerde rekenmeester te word, kan aansoek doen om opgelei te word. Die CFA is trots daarop dat dit een van min instansies wêreldwyd is wat nog matrikulante in diens neem as leerlingrekenmeesters.
