Nuwe vaardighede, nuwe begin

Die Women at Work se New Beginnings (voorheen bekend as die Change)-program, die FirstRand Namibia Foundation en die Namibiese Korrektiewe Dienste (NCS) het kragte saamgespan om voormalige gevangenes wat op parool vrygelaat is in die samelewing te herintegreer.

Dit deur hulle met basiese vaardighede toe te rus wat hul kanse verhoog om in diens geneem te word of hul eie besigheid te begin.

NCS bring Women at Work in kontak met voormalige gevangenes wat op parool vrygelaat is en graag oor wil begin. Die inisitatief word deur die FirstRand Foundation gefinansier.

Die inisiatief is in 2023 begin en onlangs het sewe studente, beide mans en vroue, insluitend vier voormalige gevangenes, hul drie maande opleiding in naaldwerk met die hand en kleremaak voltooi.

Mervin Mokwena, ’n voormalige vlootbeampte in diens van die Namibiese vloot, het die opleiding suksesvol voltooi. Hy het sy reis gedeel met sy stryd teen die verslawing aan crack-kokaïen wat daartoe gelei het dat hy sy werk verloor het en haweloos gelaat is.

Mokwena het ’n skootrekenaar van ’n plaaslike winkel probeer steel. Hy is egter gevang en tot 18 maande tronkstraf gevonnis. Hy is op parool vrygelaat en is sedertdien aktief by inisiatiewe betrokke wat ten doel het om sy verslawing te takel en wat fokus om homself te verbeter.
